	Breanne Johnson is an artist and designer working internationally. She holds a Masters of Fine Art in 3D Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art and Bachelor of Art degrees in Visual Art and Political Science from the University of Chicago. Breanne shares citizenship with the United States and Curaçao. Her practice focuses on phenomenological furniture, objects, happenings, infrastructures and provisionally scaled architectures that examine our relationship to the social and physical spaces we inhabit, in pursuit of deeper spatial awareness, social connection, self-embodiment and greater authenticity. She is concerned with the domestication of public space, recreating the comforts and rituals of interiorty outside the home. In her preeminent pillars of inquiry, she employs the acts of listening, cooking, and the ritual of eating. She proposes speakers, objects and spaces for listening, as well as unconventional, often mobile or outdoor kitchens, service stations, architectural interventions and alternative dining tables. She works often with and within systems, thinking about the way objects, architectures and component parts inform each other and work in tandem. In creating artworks that facilitate happenings, she uses design, architecture and activation as tools to generate interactions, either with oneself or with others. Breanne identifies strongly as a creative problem solver, and grapples with a diverse range of problems through a diverse range of media. In 2026 Breanne will participate in d-o-t-s’ residency project Cuisine Banale/Common Kitchen and Scottish Sculpture Workshop’s Group Residency. Breanne was also a 2024 Artist in Residence with Praksis Oslo, a 2023 Open Studio Art Resident with Haystack School, the recipient of the 2023 CAA Ox-Bow School Art Course Award, the recipient of the 2022 Pophouse Design Fellowship, and a 2021 Artist in Residence with Chop Wood Carry Water.

Comunity kitchen design concept for Samong Haven in Sumberkima, Bali

Designed during and after Praksis Oslo residency Bricking-It : An Urgent Situation
The Circle Kitchen, situated underneath the roof of the traditional Limesan at Praksis Oslo’s creative project Samong Haven in Sumberkima, is designed to be democratic and egalitarian, without a clear front/back, nor private/public orientation. &#38;nbsp;Using local brickwork techniques and a brick-laying pattern designed by fellow artist resident Elise Hobeke, the Circle Kitchen conceptualizes a visually permeable, multi-functional, open-air kitchen that can be activated by staff members for various programming initiatives, or by community members for events and ceremonies. The kitchen features counter and storage space, a standing bar, a sink and wash basin, a small refridgerator, strategic brickwork for additional shelf space around the central utility island, a pantry shelf, and functions in tandem with resident-designed rocket stoves just outside the Limesan.

	LAND FURNITURE:2021
A series of chairs made at Nance Klehm’s residency Chop Wood Carry Water in the Driftless Region in Freeport, IL.&#38;nbsp;

Materials that were not collected or harvested on the property include cotton kitchen twine, nails, wood glue and hardware.

REED CANARYGRASS CHAIR
Woven from the flowering stems of Reed Canarygrass, an aggressive, invasive prairie grass that was introduced to the area as cattle feed, this chair is the most delicate and features the most (misused) hardware. Other materials include cattails, native sunflowers, and tree branches. A string dyed with pokeberry ink binds the grasses in bundles along the right side, and the red from the ink bleeds into the surrounding grass fibers.
TENDRIL CHAIR
Made from scavenged tree branches, rough-sawn milled wood, kitchen twine, wire mesh, a wire spring, and grape vine tendrils, the Tendril Chair is the sturdiest of the three. The wire mesh on the back is for inserting flower arrangements, which will wilt and dry (pictured with an arrangement of prairie grass). The grape tendrils woven into the backrest grow along the road to Nance’s house, and remind me of my mother’s curls.
POND PAPER CHAIR
The Pond Paper chair is clad in a naturally occurring paper that forms in the prairie at its lowest point, as water there moves, gathers and recedes. The overall dimension of the pond has increased significantly in the 7 years Nance has lived on the property, a result of the permaculture work she’s done, rehabilitating the native landscape. As the water disintegrates and pulps the surrounding grasses, new and dried fibrous grasses weave through it, and it coagulates into a thin, nest-like ecosystem for snails, algae and microorganisms, until it is left to dry and harden in the sun. I submerged the paper in water before wrapping it around a wooden chair frame made from tree branches and a milled pine seat, and sewed it together with kitchen twine, leaving white bows exposed at the back.&#38;nbsp;


All chairs were made with a “creative problem solving” approach to the materials at hand, and did not have plans, sketches, or visualizations prior to their production and completion.

Chicago, IL, USACast aluminum, aluminum bar, steel, electrical componentsThe shelf installation commissioned by the Night Heron, a wine bar opening 2026 in Chicago, IL, functions as a room divider and “living” design intervention. Built to complement and separate a “living room” on the east end of the bar from the main bar space, the shelf is programed for various functions, including record storage, book and game storage, lighting, coat storage and miscellaneous bar storage. In conversation with the bar owner, Steven Lucy, it is designed to be a malleable and adaptive object, that changes and grows with the bar, as the bar accrues context and history. Touch points incorporated into the shelf designate it as two-sided, one side serving the bar staff and the other side the guests.
